2025 Turnip Green Festival

Celebrating its 27th year, the Nashville Farmers' Market is hosting the annual Turnip Green Festival on Saturday, November 1. From 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. , this FREE festival will celebrate all things turnip greens, including live funk and soul music from the Nashville All Stars Band, Smiley’s famous cast iron cauldron of braised greens, Chef Tandy’s catfish, cornbread and braised greens plates, Thanksgiving-themed vendor specials, fun for the kids, food trucks, fall produce and more! The event is free, and parking is also free!

Smiley’s Farm: slow-simmered braised turnip greens with smokey ham hock flavor, catfish, bean and cornbread plates

TuRnip Greens with Roasted Turnips and Balsamic Glaze

Ingredients:

¼ cup shallots, sliced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/8 cup bacon, diced

1/8 cup ham, diced

½ pound of smoked pork neck bone

½ cup white wine

2 T apple cider vinegar

¼ cup sugar

1 T paprika

1 t cayenne

2 lbs turnip greens

4 cups chicken stock or broth

Louisiana Hot sauce to taste

Instructions:

1. Cook bacon, add onions and garlic to fat and sweat until translucent, about 3 minutes

2. Add ham and neck bone, cook for 3 - 4 more minutes

3. Add white wine and cider vinegar and scrape bottom of pan

4. Add sugar and stir to dissolve

5. Stir in paprika and cayenne.

6. Add turnip greens and chicken broth

6. Simmer on low 2-3 hours until stock has reduced by half or more.

7. Add hot sauce and salt and pepper to taste

🥬 TURNIP GREEN COOK OFF 🥬

Customers of all ages are invited to enter our annual turnip green cook off for a chance to win first, second or third place! Please bring your dish, along with a written or printed recipe for the judges, to the Nashville Farmers’ Market (exact location TBD) on Saturday, November 1 at 12 p.m.

HOW TO ENTER: To enter, you MUST call or text programs manager Yolanda Manning at 615-210-6919 no later than October 24. Late entries will NOT be accepted. Upon registering, you will receive detailed information about where to park, where to bring your dish, etc. Good luck!
