Market to host Junior Chef Competition
The general public is invited to view the inaugural Tennessee State Junior Chef Competition that will be held at the Nashville Farmers’ Market October 13-14 in the Market House’s Grow Local Kitchen. The event begins at 8 a.m. both days.
The event, featuring six teams of students in grades 8-12, is sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Education’s Office of School Nutrition. The students will compete for scholarships to attend Sullivan University: $16,000 for each member of the first-place team, $10,000 for second place, and $6,000 for third.
Two teams at a time will compete within three brackets on Saturday. They will have 90 minutes to prepare, cook, plate, and present to judges. The competition will end around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Each team will create its own recipe and repeat that recipe throughout the competition. Entries will be judged on kid-friendly taste and appearance, nutrition, creativity, use of local and seasonal ingredients, and ease of replication by school cafeterias.
