The Grow Local Kitchen Residency Program

The Nashville Farmers’ Market Grow Local Kitchen Residency Program aims to mentor start-up food businesses in a dynamic, multicultural and supportive environment. A lot of folks have a great food business idea, but struggle with how to realize it. At NFM we aim to support new entrepreneurs in three important ways. First, we offer new businesses a certified kitchen that they can rent affordably. Second, we give people access to information and tools that it takes to succeed in business. Third, we give people a platform to introduce their foods and products to the greater Nashville community and even future investors. Our ultimate goal is for you to outgrow our program due to your own success! As part of the Residency Program, you will also join a thriving community of NFM merchants and producers who are always innovating and collaborating.

We are currently offering two types of residences in the Grow Local Kitchen: the GLK Food Service Residency and the GLK Production Residency.

  • The GLK Food Service Residency is designed for businesses looking to rent the GLK during lunch (or dinner) shifts in the Market House in order to retail meals directly to NFM patrons.

  • The GLK Production Residency is designed for business looking to rent the GLK during evening or early morning shifts in order to prepare food products or meals for subsequent sale at the Market and other locations. (Note: the NFM must be at least one of your ultimate retails sites, e.g., businesses that sell items in the Farm Shed, at NFM Neighborhood Markets, or in the A&M Marketplace will qualify).

Each term of a residency is one year with the potential for renewal. We will accept up to eight food service residents and up to four production residents annually. But depending on the applicants, we may opt to take a smaller number and give more dates to residents chosen in order to emphasize quality over quantity.

All GLK residents are required to meet the following commitments during their residencies:

  • Review and sign off on the GLK Policy Manual; comply with same

  • Attend 6 workshops per year, including required courses on food safety and sanitation (or equivalent certification), financial literacy, diversity and inclusion, social media and marketing

  • Commit to scheduled dates

  • Participate in your choice of extra Market events (one per quarter): Night Market, chef demo, special market event, teaching class/workshop

  • Keep all accounts in good standing with timely payments each month

  • Keep business documents current

  • Attend mandatory quarterly residency meetings (or as needed)

  • Respond to NFM email communications in a professional and timely manner

  • Report quarterly sales data

  • Market your business through social media

  • Participate in NFM waste reduction practices

GLK residency application

Applications are due October 21, 2019 and will require interviews and two references (see final question on application form). Applicants will be notified of their status in November and scheduling will take place that month.

Night Markets occur year-round on the third Friday of each month (5-9 p.m.); Market Kitchen demos happen on most spring, summer and fall Saturdays at 11 a.m.
